3).What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Questionnaire
1). What genre would you describe the video and print productions as being?

2). How would you best describe the narrative of the music video?

3). From looking at the print productions, which group of people in society would you think that this artist would appeal to the most?

4). Do you find the music video easier to understand, because of the use of ordinary people and locations that you can relate to?

5). What did you like most about the music video?

6). Did you think the use of split screen was used effectively?

I handed the questionnaire out to 25 people, within the 16-24 age bracket, which is our target audience. I asked mostly females to fill out the questionnaire, as they make up most of our target audience for the production, so i thought it would be fairer to carry it out this way, as it provided me with an even spread of results as i asked a variety of ages, within the target audience as opposed to sticking with just one age, although i did just ask females, i still believe this to be fair, because as i have learnt through my research that the genre and target audience i am trying to appeal to, the majority of the audience for this genre is women and girls. I used social networking sites, to send my questionnaires out, i chose this method because i believed it to be the most efficient way to send the questions out and retrieve them in a quick and efficient manner. The use of social networking sites, enabled me to ask a large variety of people, of different ages and backgrounds, this enabled me to have a more varied view, because of the variation between people, as they were not all friends, from the same school, the same age or came from the same backgrounds or liked similar things, i think this is positive, because if all of the people i had asked knew each others, or had similar interests and came from similar backgrounds, their answers may have been very similar, therefore not allowing me to get a vast amount of information from the results. The feedback that i received from this questionnaire helped me greatly in understanding the audiences perception of the genre and who the video and print productions were aimed at.

The feedback, has helped me to understand what i would do differently next time. If i was to carry out this task again i would take in to account the audience comments, i would try to add more codes and conventions of the folk genre, so that there was no confusion when understanding the genre of the video, and it was made clear within the production that the genre is folk and this is the audience that i am trying to appeal to. This is the only strong point of what i could do differently next time, that i got from the audience feedback questionnaire, because of this i think that next time i complete a production, and need to get audience feedback, i would make a question more specific to finding out what the audiences thinks i could do next time that would improve my production.

I was pleased with the feedback i received through my questionnaire, because i got the type of answers that i was hoping for, and this therefore proved that i had appealed to my target audience through the use of codes and conventions of the folk genre. Within the answers that i gathered from my questionnaire, i was not entirely suprised with the results that i gained, because the answers were fairly similar and were very near to my expectations of what the audience would think about the music video, who its target audience is and their demographics.

Responses

1). The majority of the audience that i asked in reply to question one; what genre would you best describe the video and print productions as, was answered in very similar ways. The majority of the audience thought that the genre was a mixture of, folk, acoustic and indie. One member of the audience gave this reasoning as to why they thought the genre was a mixture of the above three; "i think the video and print productions have elements of all three of these genres within them, i shows evidence of the folk genre because of the style of the artists voice and the muted images and soft lighting that has been used throughout, however it also has elements of acoustic, purely because of the instrumentals involvement, and lastly the production as a whole has an element of the indie genre, because of the use of split screen, which creates an artistic vibe, the use of split screen is quite different and adds variety.

2). This question asking, how would you best describe the narrative of the video?, was quite varied because of how the audience interpreted it. Many interpreted it as what is the story, what happens, what is the beginning, middle and the end, however others interpreted it as what is the narrative structure, therefore this question was not hugely successful in gathering information, although some common answers that i received, were that the narrative of the video was based around a couple breaking up, however it is based along a romantic narrative, and many of the audience also replied that there was no real structure to the video.

3). This question, was asking very much the same as, "what genre do you think this is?", because it was asking what groups of people do you think this would appeal to from looking at the print productions. This question is about the target audience and genre, and how the print productions appeal to the audience, and also how they represent the audience of this genre, and how and what they are viewed as within society. This question was answered, in a very similar way to question 1, in the way that the audience replied with answers, such as, "people who like folk, acoustic, indie music", many people listed the type of places the suggestive audience would shop, eat, places they go to, festivals they attend, gadgets they own, fashions that they follow and other artists they like.

4). There was a majority vote to this question with the reply of, yes the use of ordinary people and locations who i could relate to made the video easier to understand. They said this was because, they were already familiar with the locations, helping them to understand the connotations connected with these places, therefore they could connect them well to the genre and also understand how the characters integrated within the locations.

5). This question was answered in a very varied manner, i believe this to be because of the diversity of the audience that i had asked to fill out the questionnaire, and also opinion makes up a large proportion of this question, because it is each individuals personal preferences. Although, the majority of people included the use of split screen and the use of multiple locations, when they were asked why, many replied because it kept them intrigued and involved in the video, the use of split screen kept the audience intrigued because it is different and added a different pace to the video.

6). This question leads on from what the majority said in the previous questions, as this question asks was the split screen used effectively, the last questions evidently shows that it was.

4).In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My music video uses many conventions and codes of a music video. Firstly my video is focused around the breaking down of a relationship of a boy and girl. These romantic but sad narratives of a couple’s journey together are used in many music videos and films of this genre. Examples of where this is in use is in films such as; `(500) days of summer` which is referenced within the music video, this narrative is also shown in many female folk artists music videos, such as Laura Marling. These videos also portray a sense of loneliness. In my initial research, I decided I would not use a performance element, however once I had finished shooting, I then decided to include a performance aspect, because like many other videos within the folk genre they focus on the storyline, and adding a performance aspect would add vairety.

In my research of performance aspects within music videos, I looked at performances by Laura Marling and Marina and the Diamonds, they were both fairly similar because they were filmed within a house, and neither of them had an audience present, making the performances relaxed and intimate, therefore allowing the audience watching to feel as if they are part of and involved within the video, having been invited into the home to her the artist rehearse. It also allows audience to relate to the artist, and become familiar with them, I applied this, to my own music video, because although I used a performance aspect, it was just showing the artist playing the piano and singing, in a room by herself, which creates an intimate feel with the audience. Although the audience are not within the performance, so you can not directly see who the audience are, you can identify who they are because of the location, costume and mood. The performance element to the video, creates more variety and adds diversity to the video, it changes the pace of the narrative in the video.

Below are screen captures from the music videos by; marina and the diamonds and laura marling, which i used as part of my research into performance aspects of music videos. These images demonstrate the intimacy the audience feel towards the artist, and the way that their surroundings represent who the audience are.

This image, above shows the performance aspect of the music video, and shows how the location, costume and mise-en-scene, represent the audience.

“The grand narrative structure”, is conventionally discarded within music videos, according to Goodwin’s theory. The music video may tell a story, but the problem will often remain unresolved. My music video complies with this convention, abandoning the grand narrative structure, because although it implies of story of heartbreak, there is no clear ending, where the problem has been visibly resolved. Goodwin’s theory the, abandonment of the grand narrative structure, suggests intertextuality within the video, because of the way that the codes and conventions relate to other media texts, the audience construct their own narrative.

The use of split screen is a vast part of the narrative structure, because although the narrative is focused around the boy and girl`s relationship, and how they are falling out of love, the narrative structure is also focused around the journey of the couple, both the literal journey on the train to the beach, and the metaphorical journey that their relationship has taken. The way the split screen has been constructed with the use of movement and varying sizes of frames within the split screen, creates a rhythm within the music video and adds a varying pace. It adds a musical feel, as well as just telling a story. The structure is reflected, through the movement of the frames and the pace of the music video, this makes the structure evident rather than telling a story. The shots that were used within the video; some were used to tell the story and others were used to show the structure. The structure was shown more through the construction, in the movement of the frames, however the shots that could be said as evidently showing the structure would be shots such as; the shots of the close ups of the girl with her hair blowing in the wind, and the movement shots of the sea and the birds, and also the shots of the sun through the train window.

Many of the codes and conventions that I have used within my own music video, comes from the genre of the music and the conventions that are used within the folk genre. I have used some of the codes and conventions within the folk, acoustic genre, as well as using these codes and conventions of this genre. I have also gained inspiration from art films, therefore using some codes and conventions from the artistic genre. The art genre, works well within the folk genre as a type of sub-genre because their target audiences have similar interests, although I may have challenged some of the conventions in genres, it has enabled me to create a production and ancillary texts that will appeal to more than one target audience.

Within the research stages, the various researches that I carried out identified the codes and conventions of the folk genre, in which I could apply to the music video. I have challenged some of the typical conventions that are used within this genre, as the artist is usually used throughout the whole video, in order to tell the story, however I wanted to use actors for the narrative of the music video so that the audience could relate to them being very ordinary, everyday people. I then used short clips of the artist throughout the video, so the audience could identify with her as a person, and become familiar with whom she is. It also allows the audience to understand the concept of the narrative through the artist’s viewpoint, and connect with the artist. I used some of the conventions that are typically used within this genre.

2).How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

A vast variety of new technologies, were used within the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages of my production. I used new technologies in a variety of ways to create different effects. In the initial research stages, I used websites, which enabled me to understand the genre and its conventions and concepts, I did this by looking at the websites of artists who had a similar style of music to the artist I had chosen, therefore allowing me to state which genre my piece of music was. I also used youtube, in order to find music videos by artists who comply with the same genre, as the music that I chose. By, finding videos by artists of the same or a similar genre, it allowed me to understand the codes and convent ions that were used, as well as looking at music videos I also looks at films, that were within this genre, and used youtube to look at them and upload them on to my blog, so I have a record of research. I used these devices, youtube and other websites, during the target audience research section, as they enabled me to understand who the people are behind the genre, and understand the stereotypical lifestyle, of the audience of this genre. I used various websites, to find album covers from the artists that I had used within my earlier research of music videos, I also used music magazines such as, NME and Q, to find advertisements for the release of albums. I used my blog, blogger.com, to display all of the research that I carried out. One of the main conventions of my music video was the, split screen, I researched other films, music videos and short videos/advertisements, which used this convention, to see and understand how they used it to tell the narrative of the video. I started my research of split screens by finding the definition, on wikipedia, which lead to me reading a list of some of the most famous videos that have used split screen, leading to me watching, cibo matto`s music video, sugar water, which although it is not the same genre as Shannon Hurley’s, sunrise, it does show a great example of split screen, in which it focus’s on the movement of the two characters in either side of the split screen, and how the movement of one characters leads and is synchronized to the movement of the other character. I then uploaded the videos, which displayed the use of split screen within them, on to my blog. The use of technology was slightly less within the stages of planning. Within the planning of the music video, I used a digital SLR camera to photograph the location shots, a scanner so we could scan in the storyboard, and then use blogger to display it. Within the planning of my print productions, I used a scanner, to scan in my designs so I could upload them onto blogger. I also used, datont.com, which is a website, where people design and display fonts that they have created, for others to use, I found a variety of fonts on this website, and used my favourite which was displayed on my ancillary products. Although, I did not use technology very frequently within this stage, the use of a scanner helped greatly, as it allowed me to display documents on my blog, and include them in my print productions, as I could upload them digitally onto the computer. The construction of both the music video production and ancillary texts used the most technological devices, enabling me to use and experiment with a vast variety of new technologies. Within the construction, shooting and editing, of the music video I used a digital video camera, tripod, SLR digital camera, and SLR film camera and adobe premiere elements.

Within the construction of my print productions I used a digital SLR camera and adobe Photoshop elements. I used blogger to upload both of these productions; I also used youtube to post the music video on. We had to do a vast amount of shoots, to get all the footage that we needed, because we encountered some problems. When we planned our shooting schedule, we decided we would use two cameras, one to film the girl and the other to film the boy, because this would make it easier when editing because of the split screen, however on the first day of shooting one of cameras stopped working, therefore having only one camera to use, this did delay us slightly on the day, however we overcame the problem. It was needed for us to re-shoot the scenes of the girl on the train, because of the tape that we used to film this scene breaking. The camera was very easy to use, and allowed us to achieve most things that were needed or that we wanted, however it would have been better if it focused, and it had a larger zoom. The use of a digital video camera, allowed us to take a vast amount of footage, giving us lots of raw material that we could then edit and cut, this worked very well because of the different locations that we used, and the amount of shots that we wanted to achieve in each location. This also worked well, because of the use of split screen; we wanted a variety of shots of both characters. In post production, we used adobe premiere software to edit the footage, there is other editing software such as windows that is available, however we opted to use adobe software, because it gives a larger variety of tools that can be used. Adobe, also made it easier when creating the split screen in the video, the process of creating the split screen, involves placing two lots of footage onto the canvas, making sure they are directly underneath each other on the timeline so they will play in unison, then you just have to resize the shots to fit the canvas size. The split screeen, opened decisions when creating the split screen; of the size of the individual frames, and if they would be the same size of different sizes, i also needed to decide if they would start moving at the same time and stop at the saem time or one frame would be still and one would move. One of the biggest decisions was what shots to put in the frames and which ones would work well together, and if they would complemente each other, also needed to thikn about how the co9lours and movement in each frame work together, for example; the shots of the girl and the boy at the train station and on the train where the frames are positioned horizontally and they both look at the same time. I used photoshop, to create the ancillary products, because although there is other editing programmes, photoshop gave me the most variety of editing tools, out of the various edting programmes that are avaliable to use.

1).How effective is the combination of your main production and ancillary texts?

My main production, the music video, and ancillary texts, link to each other because they are appealing to the same target audience and use the conventions of `folk genre`. The use of ancillary texts helps to reinforce the main production, because they reiterate the artist`s brand and the way this was presented in the music video.

The purpose of the main production, the music video is to sell the product and that particular song, the ancillary texts; album covers and adverts are produced to advertise the release of a new album or single. In this set of products, in order to show the branding of the artist, as well as, the artist and album name, other factors, such as the font type, colour palette and muted images are kept the same across the video and print productions such as the font, images and general style, this use of repetitive features creates a strong brand identity. These products aim to appeal to audiences who are females in the age range of around 16 to 24 years of age, and people who like the folk/acoustic genre. The production appeals largely to females, because of the narrative, of a relationship breaking down, it also appeals to female because they enjoy the romantic narrative.

The mise-en-scene, also contributes to the appeal of the music video to women because of the locations, costumes and genre. The genre of music largely determines who the target audience is, and how therefore we needed to appeal to them. It also represents them as being young. The characters in the music video, do not feature, neither does the artist, on the album cover or advertisement, because I believe a sense of mystery about the artist. This makes a point of creating ancillary texts without images of the characters or artists on them enables the audience to focus on the genre more, because this space can be filled using background images of the locations used in the music video, therefore creating a sense of familiarity brand identification without revealing the artist or any characters. Laura Marling uses this convention on her album cover, Ghosts, which can be seen within my album cover research. Her album cover consists of a yellow, beige background with a black outlined design in the centre, which surrounds the album name. I have used this convention because I believe it creates an artistic feel to the production, and creates mystery as to who the artist is. These images, would be geared towards the genre of the music and appeal to the target audience because they would be a reflection of the type of lifestyle that this group lead, this would have audience appeal because they can relate to the images that are shown.

The images included in the print productions would reflect the lifestyle that this particular group lead because, it would show the places they live or like to go, it would also reflect the type of things they enjoy doing in their spare time. In the ancillary texts, the audience are represented as creative, artistic people who have a sense of individualism; this is because of the use of muted images reflecting the narrative portrayed in the music video. The creative artistic feel in the music video, is shown by the use of the split screen technique, the appeal of the narrative that particular age group and how they can relate to the narrative.

The music video, for `bad day, by Daniel powter`, that I looked at for my initial research, reflects the feel in my own music video best, because of the use of the split screen convention, the characters and location being very ordinary and everyday, and the narrative in `bad day`, was about a boy and girl falling out of love. The sense of individualism that is portrayed is reflecting the use of everyday characters that present the production with a very ordinary and everyday feel. The ordinary and everyday locations, are also presented in the ancillary texts, because I use the beach and train as the locations for the images on my anciallary texts, which are the same as in the video.

The research that I conducted where I analysed different album covers of a similar genre to my own, which gave me ideas for how I could appeal through this genre to my target audience. I looked at the codes and conventions that had been utilised within these cd covers, and how they complied with the genre. The codes and conventions that I used within my final production were influenced by the music videos that I had researched.

The main convention that I used was the split screen technique, I also adhered to the soft lighting that was used in my research videos, and also within the print productions I applied the same type of font. I took certain aspects from the album covers I researched and was influenced by them whilst in the process of creating my print productions. I liked the font that was used on Laura Marling`s album cover for, Ghosts, therefore when designing and researching fonts I used the influence I had from, Ghosts, to allow me to create or find a similar font, which would create the same connotations. Kate Walsh’s album cover for, Tim’s House, features an image of herself on the back and front cover, with the artist and album name to accompany it, although my album cover does not include any photographs of the artist, it does use the same washed out muted colours technique, which adheres to the genre of the music. I used soft lighting , in both the music video and anciallary text, which is another factor that i kept the same, i used the soft lighting in the images on the front cover of the album.

The planning aspects to both my final production and ancillary texts, involved a variety of tasks to enable the shooting process to run smoothly. Whilst carrying out the planning for the music video especially, myself and my production team needed to discover the mood and how we would create this through a mixture of; imagery, colours, mise-en-scene, audience, costumes and location shots. These aspects are very important as they set a mood and create the feel that is needed in the video in order to appeal to the target audience and apply to the genre.

The mood of the music video is creative, soft and romantic, this mood was achieved by the use of soft lighting within the video and print productions, and the way the objects and settings around the characters are bathed in light. The costume of the artist within the video, because the colours of her clothing are light and the blue top links to the beach location, the clothing is soft and include muted colours. The mood that is created is also very reflective, because of the lighting, the emphasis of sunlight and the use of a piano in the live performance, which therefore gives the music video a creative and artistic feel. I applied the lighting effects, in the ancillary products by using adobe photoshop elements and adding shadows, and adding strobes of sunlight and moving the light around to cast light on different objects.

The creation of the storyboard is a key part in the planning process of the final production, because it gathers all the angles, shot types and movement in one area, that will be used in the video, research can help to decide shot types and angles, as we can take how we portray something because of the angle or shot type and apply this to our won video, because of the way we would like a certain aspect to be portrayed. The planning process allows us to have a record of all our initial thought out ideas and plans, which can be used to compare to the final production and the changes that have been made between planning and research process to the final cut. It also helps us to understand why these changes took place, the problems that we were faced with and how these could be avoided if this task was undertaken again. In conclusion to this question, I believe that the combination of my main production and ancillary texts work effectively as a package, because of the links in codes and conventions that have been used within them, but also the running similar themes that appear in both sets of products.

Final cd cover designs.

I used design 2, for a template to this design, however i did change the front cover slightly as i have used three images, as i thought it reflected the use of split screen in the music video, because of the way i used one main image and smaller images along the side to show the surroudings in the music video.

Conclusion

a clockwork orange does not have one certain time period; alexs shakespearian language, costume, classical music. 1971, is one time period and sum up what britans identity was shown as bring in 1971 through the film.

How does a clockwork orange represent britains identity in 1971?

A clockwork orange, was firstly written as a British dystopian novel in 1962 by Anthony Burgess, it was not until 1971 that Stanley Kubrick adapted the novel into a film, he is known for making disturbing films. The main themes that the film was featured around are; morality, youth, psychology, violence, the government/state/society and the individual. The title, "a clockwork orange", is cockney slang for meaning, all of the naturalness of something has been removed, the title is also a metaphor meaning, "an organic entity, full of juice and sweetness and agreeable odour being turned into an automation" This film, came with much controversy because it inspired a mass number of crimes, they were known as copycat crimes, because the crimes that are shown in, a clockwork orange, were being copied in society, this resulted in the film being withdrawn from distribution and cinemas, approximatly a year after its release. The film, was not allowed to be seen legally again until the year 2000, after Kubricks death. Kubrick said, "the story (clockwork orange) functions on several levels, political, socilogical, philosophical and whats most important, on a dreamlike pyschological symbolic level".

Britains identity in 1971, was shaped through family, youth groups and tribes, government, state, society, tribal collectivity, violence, modern urban landscapes, manipulation and exploitation of individuals and british collective identity. Young people and tribes identity in 1971 britain, is represented in a clockwork orange, as the droogs; alexs tribe. Through the use of a tribe such as the droogs, youths are being represented as violent, unruly and disrespectful, the behaviour of the youths in britain, links to the way in which the government worked. The rising youth culture, shown is a clockwork orange is shown as being a threat, within british society. The government has been represented as reppresive, corrupt and a state that resorts to violence. The way that a clockwork orange has represented the government in 1971, shows a correlation within how the youths acted, which suggests that because of the corrupt government it caused youth groups to become unruly within society. In, A clockwork orange, the family unit is shown as alexs family, they shown as being very disregarged by alex and he is very unattached from his family. This represents the distance between family and youth culture, as alex is presented as being very distant from his family. The state, government and society are shown as being violent, brutal and barbaric. The landscpaes that are used within a clockwork orange are large tower blocks of flats, which have a brutalist feel to them, and looks inhabitant and imoral as landscapes. The brutalist feel that these tower blocks have, echo the brutalist behaviour of the governemtn and youth groups. Collective british identity, is not largely apparant within the film, it is not focused on within the film alot, therefore it shows connotations of british identity becoming obsolete and meaningless.

A clockwork orange, it could be said that it does not have any apparant time period that it is set within, because of the costume, emphasis on classical music and the shakespearian language used by alexs and his tribe, however it is shown on one hand as being set within the 1971 time frame, because of the buildings , which were typical of 1971 britain , as many built in this era in britain. The emphasis and focus on youth groups and rise in youth culture and the violence and barbarism shown by youths and government, shows that a clockwork orange was set within 1971. The themes within, a clockwork orange, that represent britains identity in 1971 are; modern world era, post ww2, cold war paranoia, new britain and the rise is popular youth culture. The modern world era, shows 1971 britain, as a brutal, ansd futuristic world, because of the modernist brutalist buildings, connoting violence and the bright colour prints, which connote a futuristic and modern world feel. There is aslo an element of the post ww2 attitude within the film, because of the way that the youth are valued, even though they are violent and barbaric, with the attitude of "we fought for our children". Liberty and freedom, are represented as part of this era, because of the post war attitude of how we have achieved freedom, through our efforts, therefore perhaps leading to the government being represive. There was a threat from the youth, because of the increase in youth culture, there was also paranioa because of the cold war, this esculated into a question of threat and fear, because of where the threat was from was unknown. New britain, was forming a different identity to britain, because of the weakened power in empire, decline in industry and the changing relationships between classes, this supports the evidence that the government at this time was corrupt, permissive and violent, because of the way that britains empire was changing, and was becoming courrpt, the governemtn seemed to folow suit. The rise in youth culture, is one of the main topics within, a clockwork orange, and the emphasis is put very heavily on this group in society in the film. The 1960s subcultures, made a vast divide between generations, this is apparant in alexs case because of his attitude towards his parents and the way through costume, behaviour and language that we can see the age and generation divide.

The theory of Micheal maffesoli, has been used within, a clockwork orange, it has been used to show his theory of tribal collectivity, when showing alex and his group, who have a collective name; the droogs, this comes from his theory, "the time of tribes". They are shown as a tribe, because of their similar interest, behaviour, language and costume. Maffesoli, also talks about in his theory the effect that location has on your identity, which is evident in a clockwork orange, because this relates to9 the brutalist architechure that we see in the film, connotating violence, therefore having an effect on the droogs.

Identity, in a clockwork orange is represented through a vast amount of aspects, they all revolve around the youth culture, showing how changes in society and an individuals surroundings influence tribes to form and their behaviour. A clockwork orange, represents britain in 1971 in some aspects of the film, however in other ways it is very opposite to the era it is set in, because of the emphasis on classical music, which creates a very traditional element to the film, the adjustments laex and the rest of the droogs put on the enlgish language, using shakespearian twists in their words and the droogs costumes, do not reflect 1971, however the costume of alexs parents are typical of the 1970s era.

dafont.com font designs for my album cover.

I chose this font because although the initial style of writing is quite simple, it has alot of detail within the letters, because of the dots and flowers on the indiviual letters. I also chose it because the letters are thin, therefore they look dainty, feminine and delicate, i wanted to achieve these from the font, because i believe it responds well to the genre of the music, artist and the overall feel that the music video has. The use of detail on individual letters, adds variety and interest to the font.
I chose this font because of the design uses thin lines, however they are quite dark, as opposed to the above design where athough the lines are thin, they are light. I also like the way the font is curvy, which adds interest. I like how simple the design is, yet it still holds interest.

I chose this font design, because although through my own designs i learnt that i preffered a thin font, because it would work better with the genre of my music, however i chose this because although it is a thick font, i think the way that the font has been shaded, creates a softer look to it, therefore making it more feminine, appealing to my target audience.

Links to lyrics within the music video.

I've got to reach you
I've got to see you
Let the light shine down on me
When the day breaks
And the sky is changing colors
into something new
I want to see it with you
Sunrise
I want to see you again
Promise that you'll always stay
Sunrise
When the world is brand new
I want to see it with you
I want to touch you
I want to make you feel
Like you're the only one
In this world for me
I want to hold you
I want to make you see
That yesterday was long ago
And soon it will be
Sunrise
I want to see you again
Promise that you'll always stay
Sunrise
When the world is brand new
I want to see it with you
Cause I know we can't let this end
We can say all the sorries in the world
Just to be friends
There's nothing I want more
Than flying home
Just to meet you
Sunrise
Sunrise
I want to see you again
Promise that you'll always stay
Sunrise
When the world is brand new
I want to see it with you
Sunrise
I want to see you again
Promise that you'll always stay
Sunrise
When the world is brand new
I want to see it with you
Sunrise
I want to see you again
Promise that you'll always stay
Sunrise

Within the music video, i have made links to the lyrics through the visuals, such as the `let the sun shine down on me`, i have used visuals of the bright sun light within the split screen, and i have also encorparated a large amount of light within the shots of the cdharacters, especially in the train shots. `Ive got to reach you`, is represented by the visual of the boy texting the girl, therefore showing communication and a way of `reaching` someone. `i want to see you` and `i want to see it with you`, are shown by the split screen shots in which the shots of the boy and girl are positioned horizontally, the imagery represents the lyrics because of the way they both run their heads at the same or similar times, which shows that they are looking at something, and the way that they are both shown doing this action at the same time, connotes that they both feel the same way. The title of the song, which features heavily in the song, `sunrise`, is linked to the imagery and feel of the music video, because of the lighting within the video connoting a sunrise and the chosen beach location which is associated with sunshine. The flashback scene within the music video, links to many aspects of the song, it refers to lyrics such as; `when the world is brand new`, as although it shows the couples break up, however it does connote a new beginning, and `i know we cant let this end`, which shows how they did have feelings for each. All of the lyrcis, are linked to either by visuals and the story within the music video.

How did your research and planning inform your production of your music video? practise evaluation question.

My initial research helped me to plan my music video, aesthetically as well as the technicalities being the use of split screen within the video. The research enabled me to look into target audience, and genre, which helped me in the planning of the video, so I could make sure that I was appealing to my target audience by using conventions of that particular genre. The planning of my music video allowed me to have a clearer idea of what I wanted to achieve and also helped the shooting process to go much smoother, because I knew the shots that needed to be taken in each location, and the props and costumes that we needed for each location.

The similar artist research, where I looked at three music videos; Laura Marling, Ellie Goulding and Lissie, who are all of a similar genre to my artist; Shannon Hurley. I looked at the conventions that they used within their music videos, however they do not comply with the main convention of my music video which is the split screen technique. Although they did not use a split screen, they did help me to understand how to appeal to my target audience because they are of a similar genre. I also took inspiration from these videos, for how to light my video.

The videos I used for my initial plan and research directly responding to my video, was; (500) days of summer, bad day by Daniel powter and your secret by jean-Sebastian monzani. (500) days of summer and the Bad Day music video, both incorporate split screen, which informed me of how I should use the technique and the type of shots that I should put into a split screen format. I also used some of the ideas that features in these videos, such as using the split screen to show the boy and girl separately, as they do in (500) days of summer, because it shows the separation between them. I decided to use a performance element within the video, because of the interest that it adds, within the Bad Day video. The video by Jean-Sebastian Monzani, features a series of notes and writing to represent the feelings of a character, this was my initial plan, however they did not look right within the video, so I replaced this idea with a series a stills of the couple breaking up, and put them together to make a flashback, within the video, I used a 35mm film camera, in order to get the similar lighting in the images to (500) days of summer, and “your secret”. The use of a train, came from the train scenes in (500) days of summer, and the lighting within this scene, which informed me well in creating my music video, as I was able to re-create this type of dispersed lighting, by using the sun.

I used the music video sugar water by cibo matto, which is a very well known video for its use of split screen. I looked at this video, to understand how split screen works and it informed me of what shots to use and how to use split screen effectively.

Overall, both the research and planning process informed me of my target audience and genre and helped me to understand how to appeal to that audience, by informing me of the codes and conventions that have been used, in this genre of film and music. The planning of my music video enabled my shoots to go smoothly, because I knew exactly what was needed from that shoot.

Font designs for my album cover.

Font designs for my album cover. All of the fonts i have designed have used a curly style of writing within them, the fonts all use thin lines, i designed them this way because i thought they look more feminine and delicate this way, however on the second page of designs, a few of the fonts do feature thick lines, i think this demonstrates how with the use of thick lines, the font can look quite masculine and harsh. I like the design, in which i have elongated one of the letters and created a stem, with a flower at the end, i like the idea of adding in extra detail and small images within the font, as it creates a more interesting effect, and would work well with the genre of the music.

Analysis of CD/DVD Digipak box.

This is Laura Marlings cover for her single, "Ghosts", the genre is folk, she also plays an acoustic guitar. The album cover is fairly simple, as it just features the artists name with a simple black design around it, and the album name underneath, only two colours are used throughout the cover; black and yellow, the use of a yellow background, softens the black font and also the tone of the yellow creates a vintage feel to the cover. The album cover, features no images of the artist herself, therefore it leaves the audience feeling intrigued as to who she is, therefore it may lead to the audience wanting to find out more, as they listen to the music, it creates a sense of mystery to the artist, however this could suggest that her audience already knows who she is, therefore she does not need to have her photo of the front of the alubm cover, because people are already familiar with her. The font, is quite detailed and intricate, it also adds to the overall vintage theme of the cover, and adds a point of interest, which make up for the lack of visuals on the cover. The artists name, album name and the design, is situated within the middle of the cover, therefore our attention is drawn automtically towards the design, however the simplicity of the cover also makes us more focused on the detail.

This album cover, suggests that the audience that Laura Marling would attract, would be mainly female, because of the delicate, intricate and feminine detailing on the album. It also suggests, that the type of bands and solo artists, this audience would listen to other than Laura Marling, would be of the alternative, folk, indie genre, such as; Bon Iver, She&Him and Bombay Bicycle Club. I also think that this type of album would appeal between the ages of; 16 and 24.

This is the album cover for the artist, Kate Walsh and this is her album, "Tim`s House". The cover features a photograph of Kate Walsh, so we instantly know who the artist is, and are given an inight into her own personal style and persona, through her image. The album and artist name are written side by side, underneath the image, at the bottom of the album cover. The artists name is in bold, however the album name is not, they are both is the same small size font, written in plain black font, this focuses our attention on the photograph, rather than the details.

The photograph, uses a light colour palette and her style is also very natural, which is in keeping with the genre, however her black coloured top, stands out from the light bleached out background. The way she is dresses in dark clothes, makes her as a character seem mysterious.

The location, of an old cobbled street in this album cover is important because it relates to the genre of the music, being folk. I think this appeals to Kate Walshs target audience, because this is perhaps somewhere that this collection of people would socialise or shop, in these older areas of cities and towns.

The back cover of the album, is very much the same in comparison to the front cover, as it features the same image of Kate Walsh, however it has been bleached out, therefore it is slightly less visible than the one on the front cover. The use of repeating the photograph, makes the image rememerable, it also adds to the simplicity, yet effectivness of the cover. The same font and colour scheme, has also been used on the back cover. The song titles, have been placed in the centre at the bottom of the back cover, and the theme that has been used with the font using one colour one side and another the other side, has been carried on, with the song titles. The repetitive and simply nature that this album cover portrays, has been used in a very effective and clever, as it is very easily recognisable.

This album cover represents the audience, as the same sort of age group as Laura Marling, that being around the 16 -24 age range. I think because this album is not within the mainstream genre, the album cover definatly confirms this and would appeal to a more alternative audience.

This is Ellies Goudlings second album, "Bright Lights". This album cover, features a photograph of the artist, the aritsts name and the album name. The photograph of Ellie Goudling, dominates the album cover, however unlike Kate Walsh`s album cover, she is not looking directly at the camera, therefore we can not see her whole face, and the way she is moving her hair around suggests that she has a bubbly personality and is fun loving, it also re-iterates to the audience that she has not been consumed by this `celebrity culture` that we live in, on the other hand it does present her as being part of this culture, however she has not being fully consumed by the culture in todays society.

The back cover of the album, features the song titles, which have been arranged in the centre and making use of the whole length of the album cover. The font that has been used, is the same as that used on the front cover and is also the same colour. The colour of the font, being a light yellow with emphasis around it, to look like lights are behind it, which relates to the album title, "Bright Lights" and the background images on both the front and back covers, because of the heavy emphasis on lights and colours related with lights such as; yellow and orange.

The pastel colour palette, and bleached out effect, goes well with the genre of the music. The dispersed light across the image, works well with the name of the album, becasue of it being called, "bright lights", and the emphasis of lights within the album cover. The colours and the photograph, creates a very natural feel, which creates connotations of the folk, alternative and indie style. Although this album is an alternative genre of music, i do believe that this artist appeals to a larger audience than most alternative artists.

In my own designs, i am going to use the type of drawn design that has been used on Laura Marlings album cover, as opposed to a photograph of the artists. I have decided to use this technique, instead of using a photograph because it represents the artists as having a sense of creativity and individualism. Another aspect that i will use is the use of muted, light colours which has been used in all of the album covers, i think this connotes femininity. I will take inspiration from the font in the laura marling cover, because it is very delicate.

The artists i have chosen to analyse are similar to Shannon Hurley, because they are all of a similar musical genre; folk, alternative, acoustic.
